Where to buy a custom wedding cake topper

Wedding guides and forums name four kinds of place. Each sells a different kind of topper.

• Etsy shops: figures made from your photo, plus name and initials toppers. You get reviews from past buyers and a message thread for each order. Wedding forums name Etsy more than any other place.
• A maker's own site: you deal with the people who make the figure. The site shows only its own reviews, so look for reviews elsewhere too.
• Amazon: photo-made figures, but most are listed as bobbleheads, not as cake toppers. The price on the search page is often for one person.
• Big-box and craft stores: ready-made couples and name toppers.

In April 2026 we bought 8 custom figures. 3 came from Etsy shops and the rest from makers' own sites.

The clay couple in the first section came from an Etsy shop. The one here came from a maker's own site. Neither looks like the people in the photos. Most of the figures came later than promised, on Etsy and off it.

• An Etsy shop skipped the proof step its listing promised. As of August 2026, our refund request was still open.
• Another Etsy shop made us place a second order, then asked for more photos after we had paid.
• A maker's site sent one proof with a three-day deadline. When we did not reply, it approved the proof for us.
• The best help also came from a maker's site. A figure arrived broken, and the remake was confirmed the next day.

6 of the 8 makers showed us a preview before making the figure. A preview, and the chance to ask for changes, did more for the result than the place we bought from.

On Etsy, Purchase Protection covers an order in these cases:

• It does not match the item description or photos.
• It arrives damaged.
• It arrives 7 or more days after the estimated delivery date.
• It does not arrive.

Message the seller first. After 48 hours you can open a case, and you need a registered Etsy account. Etsy's page does not say if a figure that does not look like you counts. A maker's own site has only its own rules, so read them before you pay.

Etsy shows where each listing ships from. In our scan of hand-sculpted toppers in September 2026, 48 of the 90 shops shipped from a US city. Many others shipped from China and Hong Kong. An order from abroad can owe import fees, and customs can hold it. Our slowest figure was held at customs.

Etsy also shows a latest delivery date. Of 392 listings for figures made from a photo, 285 gave a date more than 3 weeks after the order. The 36 that promised 2 weeks or less all ship from the US.

• A name or initials topper: most are flat and cost far less than a figure. Pick a shop that can deliver in time.
• A figure that looks like the two of you: pick a maker that shows a preview before making it and lets you ask for changes. It can be on Etsy or on its own site. Order early.

Does our baker supply the topper?

Ask your baker if they can get one when you book the cake. If not, give your topper to the baker or your day-of coordinator before the wedding.

Can I buy a custom topper in a store?

Not one that looks like the two of you. That kind of figure is made to order, and you order it online.
