Last minute cake topper: can you still get one in time?

In September 2026 we checked the delivery dates on 392 Etsy listings for toppers made from your photo. On 285 of them, Etsy's latest delivery date was more than 3 weeks after the order. On 142, it was more than a month.

Only 36 promised 2 weeks or less, and all of those ship from inside the US. Listings that ship from abroad gave later dates than US ones.

In April 2026 we bought 8 custom toppers from other makers. All but one arrived after the maker's latest promised date. The slowest was held at customs and arrived weeks after the wedding it was bought for.

Some delays you cannot control, like customs or a parcel broken in transit. Others you can cut.

• Send every photo the maker asks for when you order. One maker in our test asked for more photos twice after we paid.
• Answer each proof the same day. Some makers count their making time from the day you approve it. One maker in our test needed 5 rounds.
• Read the seller's own making and shipping times, not only the date at checkout. Etsy's date can end before them.
• With less than 3 weeks left, pick a listing that ships from inside the US.

How a fragile topper should be packed covers the other risk, a figure that arrives broken.

If the shop's latest date does not land well before the wedding, switch to a backup now, not in the last week.

• Flowers or greenery on the top tier. Ask your florist to add them to the order.
• A ready-made topper. A local party or craft store may have one on the shelf. On Etsy, ready-made figures showed earlier delivery dates than figures made from a photo.
• A paper topper you make. Cut a shape from card stock and glue it to a bamboo skewer.
• A family heirloom that means something to you.
• A sugar figure from your baker. It is custom work too, so ask early.
• No topper at all. Some couples let the flowers be the topper.

Whatever you choose, tell your baker what goes on top. They can then plan the top tier around it. Hand the topper to your baker or day-of coordinator before the wedding day, and agree who puts it on.

Does paying for rush get it here faster?

Rush shortens the time the maker needs, not the shipping. On Etsy, the delivery date did not change when rush was picked. Ask the seller for a delivery date in writing before you pay.

What if it arrives after the wedding?

On Etsy, an item counts as late when it arrives 7 or more days after the date shown at checkout. Message the seller first. After 48 hours you can open a case. A refund does not bring the topper, so line up a backup when the date is close.
