Minimalist wedding cake toppers: which kinds keep it simple

Wedding guides list the same few kinds again and again.

• Thin script cut from acrylic: your names, "Mr & Mrs" or one word.
• Gold wire bent into a surname or a line drawing of a couple.
• Geometric metal frames and shapes, in shiny or matte metal.
• A figure of a couple. Porcelain silhouettes and unpainted peg dolls are simpler takes on the classic figurine.

On Etsy in September 2026, a flat topper 4¾ inches (12 cm) tall usually cost $18 to $37 with US shipping. Unpainted one-color 3D figures usually cost $35 to $61 in the few shops that sell them. Painted or full-color figures usually cost $107 to $185.

Script is flat and costs less. A figure shows your faces and your outfits, and it stands on its own base. Whichever you pick, tell your baker early, so the topper becomes part of the cake design.

Look at the cake before you pick. If it is covered in piping and sugar flowers, keep the topper simple. A plain or naked cake can carry a larger, more detailed one.

A cake with one tier looks best with a low topper. A matte finish looks calmer than shiny metal. Some couples skip the topper and use a stem of flowers or a ribbon in their wedding color instead.

Think about where the topper goes next. In a long forum thread, most couples kept their topper. Some cut off the stick so it could stand on a shelf. A few who paid little for theirs did not mind throwing it away.

What size topper suits a small top tier?

Pick one a bit narrower than the top tier, about ½ inch (1.5 cm) to 1 inch (2.5 cm) narrower. One couple's baker suggested a topper 4 inches (10 cm) tall for a top tier 6 inches (15 cm) wide. A little too small looks better than too big, so ask your baker once the cake is chosen.
